1860: The consecrationof the new synagogue to be used by congregation B'nai Israel, located on thecorner of Stanton and Forsyth streets, took place this afternoon. The building, which is capable of holding about 800 people, was formerly a Baptist Church, but has recently been purchased, and converted into a synagogue by the abovecongregation, most of whom are natives of Holland. The interior transformationsrequired to convert it into a synagogue were not extensive or costly -- theonly change being a shifting of the position of the pews, so as to leave aspace for the "reading desk" in the centre of the church, and theerection of a semicircular ark in the place of the pulpit. The reading desk isthe same as that used in the old synagogue of this congregation, inChristie-street, made of rosewood, and surrounded by an enclosure, or railing, about ten feet square, and of elegant workmanship. On the four corners of theenclosure are gas fixtures, in imitation of candies, and over head depends amagnificent bronze chandelier, with numerous jets, all of which were keptburning during the consecration service. The "Ark" is also made ofrosewood, with sliding doors, and, when closed, is screened from public view byrich damask curtains, which were presented by the ladies of the congregation. The synagogue was filled to its utmost capacity, yesterday, by an audiencecomposed about equally of ladies and gentlemen. As the congregation B'naiIsrael is among the strictest of the "orthodox" party of the Jews, and opposed to the modern "improvements" and "reforms" thathave been introduced into some other synagogues, the old customs, seating thesexes apart, was adhered to, and the ladies occupied the gallery, while thegentlemen sat in the body of the church. Among the Jewish clergy of othercongregations present were Rabbi Morris Jerome Raphall, of the Greene-streetSynagogue; Rabbi Samuel Myer Isaacs, of the Wooster-street Synagogue and RabbiJ.J. Lyons, of the Portuguese Synagogue. The ceremonies of the consecration werearranged and conducted by Rabbi M.R. de Leeuw, of the congregation B'naiIsrael. The consecration service opened with a chant from the choir, whichoccupied the enclosure surrounding the reading-desk, and was led by theminister of the congregation. The trustees of the synagogue then enteredbearing the "sacred scrolls," and proceeded by twenty-four younggirls, dressed in white, with blue scarves, and each one carrying in her band abasket of flowers. The trustees took their position in the open space, betweenthe reading-desk and the ark, and were flanked on either side by a column ofthe young girls, who commenced picking flowers from their baskets and throwingthem at their feet, while the choir chanted a dedication psalm. The bearers ofthe sacred scrolls, accompanied by the honorary officers of the church, menmarched in procession seven times around the synagogue, each circuit beingaccompanied by an appropriate chant from the choir. On each return of theprocession to the open space fronting the ark they were pelted with roses fromthe fair hands of the young misses until the ground was literally covered withthese fragrant floral offerings. The seventh circuit having been completed, theark was opened, the sacred scrolls were deposited therein, the doors wereclosed, the damask curtains were drawn close around it, and the perpetual lampwhich depends from the ceiling in front was ignited, never to expire. Afteranother chant from the choir, Rev. Dr. RAPHALL ascended the platform on whichrests the ark, and addressed the congregation in a few remarks befitting theoccasion, taking for his text the passage of Scripture commencing, "Howbeautiful are thy Tabernacles, O Lord of Hosts." He alluded to thepersecutions which the children of Israel had suffered under the Roman Empire, and all through the Middle Ages, even to the time when they crossed the oceanand landed in this home of freedom and equality. He spoke of the progress ofthe congregation B'nai Israel, from the time when he first addressed them intheir Synagogue in Pell-street until now, and exhorted them to renewed devotionand praise to the Lord for the prosperity that had attended them. Rabbi Isaacsalluded in disparaging terms to the innovations of the "reform party"among the Israelites, which he attributed to religious pride. He thanked Godthat the congregation B'nai Israel remained uncontaminated by these pretendedreforms, and adhered strictly to the ceremonials of their fathers. Aconsecration prayer was then delivered by Rabbi de Leeuw, and the ceremoniesclosed with a Hallelujah by the choir.

1942: In the WarsawGhetto German soldiers came to collect the 192 (there is some debate about theactual number and it may have been 196) orphans and about one dozen staffmembers to take them to Treblinka extermination camp. The children were underthe care of Janusz Korczak, the pen name of Henryk Goldszmit a Polish-Jewish children's author, pediatrician, and child pedagogue, known as PanDoktor (Mr Doctor). Korczak had been offered sanctuary on the “Aryanside” of Warsaw but turned it down repeatedly, saying that he could not abandonhis children. Now too, he refused offers of sanctuary, insisting that he wouldgo with the children. The children were dressed in their best clothes, and eachcarried a blue knapsack and a favorite book or toy. Joshua Perle, aneyewitness, described the procession of Korczak and the children through theghetto to the Umschlagplatz (deportation point to the death camps):

... A miracle occurred. Two hundred children did not cry out. Two hundred pure souls, condemned todeath, did not weep. Not one of them ran away. None tried to hide. Likestricken swallows they clung to their teacher and mentor, to their father andbrother, Janusz Korczak, so that he might protect and preserve them. JanuszKorczak was marching, his head bent forward, holding the hand of a child, without a hat, a leather belt around his waist, and wearing high boots. A fewnurses were followed by two hundred children, dressed in clean and meticulouslycared for clothes, as they were being carried to the altar. (...) On all sidesthe children were surrounded by Germans, Ukrainians, and this time also Jewishpolicemen. They whipped and fired shots at them. The very stones of the streetwept at the sight of the procession.

According to a popularlegend, when the group of orphans finally reached the Umschlagplatz, anSS officer recognized Korczak as the author of one of his favorite children'sbooks and offered to help him escape, but once again, Korczak refused. Heboarded the trains with the children and was never heard from again.

Korczak's evacuationfrom the Ghetto is also mentioned in Władysław Szpilman's book The Pianist

"One day, around5th August when I had to take a brief rest from work and was walking down GesiaStreet, I happened to see Janusz Korczak and his orphans leaving the ghetto. The evacuation of the Jewish orphanage run by Janusz Korczak had been orderedfor that morning. The children were to have been taken away alone. He had thechance to save himself, and it was only with difficulty that he persuaded theGermans to take him too. He had spent long years of his life with children andnow, on this last journey he could not leave them alone. He wanted to easethings for them. He told the orphans they were going out in to the country, sothey ought to be cheerful. At last they would be able exchange the horriblesuffocating city walls for meadows of flowers, streams where they could bathe, woods full of berries and mushrooms. He told them to wear their best clothes, and so they came out into the yard, two by two nicely dressed and in a happymood. The little column was lead by an SS man who loved children, as Germansdo, even those he was about to see on their way into the next world. He took aspecial liking to a boy of twelve, a violinist who had his instrument under hisarm. The SS man told him to go to the head of the precession of children andplay – and so they set off. When I met them in Gesia Street the smilingchildren were singing in chorus, the little violinist was playing for them andKorczak was carrying two of the smallest infants, who were beaming too, andtelling them some amusing story. I am sure that even in the gas chamber, as theZyklon B gas was stifling childish throats and striking terror instead of hopeinto the orphans hearts, the Old Doctor must have whispered with one lasteffort, ‘it's all right, children, it will be all right’. So that at least hecould spare his little charges the fear of passing from life to death." ThePianist - Page 96

Sometime after, therewere rumors that the trains had been diverted and that Korczak and the childrenhad survived. There was, however, no basis to these stories. Most likely,Korczak was killed with most of his children in a gas chamber upon their arrivalat Treblinka. There is a memorial grave for him at the Powązki Cemetery inWarsaw.
